why do convicts eat their babies?

There are many reasons for autoinfanticide. Frequently it is a number of stressors. When there is a threat they may do it to regain the nutrients as was mentioned. Overcrowding is another issue. I found that my convicts turned on eachother and the fry when the fry got to a certain size.

ty folks.

well i was cleaning in there and remade there hiding place and half the fry got siphoned out and put back so i certainly upset everything for them. moving the tank isn't an option and i won't cover it since i put the tank in the living room for something to look at. i still have 30 or so fry almost an inch in their own tank doing well, i got a small waiting list of folks wanting them and a lfs that will give me credit for a batch, so the more the merrier to me:)

i did manage to put about 25 or so in the established fry tank, never seen them again. wonder if the larger ones ate them or if these guys are good hiders. ( i have rockwork, natural gravel, plants and PVC pipe, so there are a million places to hide.)

oh well. this explains all the crap i just siphoned off the sand bed. baby left overs! looked like a clydesdale took a dump in my tank! :grinyes:

if they do this again, i really want to (try) and put something else in there. but what has a chance?
