So I wanted to start a thread that showcases why everyone loves to keep fish. I'm fairly new at it but it has become an obsession. I went from a 5 gallon to 90 gallon in less than 7 weeks. Personally, I find that keeping and caring for aquatic animals is extremely therapeutic; It's very relaxing. I also know that I'm responsible for providing every aspect of my fishes survival, from water quality to nutrition. Being able to properly provide those conditions is extremely rewarding and gives me a small sense of accomplishment. My two cents. So, lets hear why YOU love keeping fish... :goldfish::goldfish::goldfish:

well,
I agree with you one the sense of accomplishment. keeping fish seem to give me exercise in mind, body and spirit. I'd rather they didn't have to rely on me though. I wish I could form a self contained eco-system (although I do enjoy the interaction as well). I love nature and I keep the fish to try to surround myself with it. when I was a kid everyone used to wake up to watch saturday morning cartoons were as I used to wake up to watch Mutual Of Omaha. LOL. everyone called me the day Steve Erwin died to ask if I was alright, haha, R.I.P Steve! it shoulda been a crock!

My reason: I have been around fish since my parents used to keep them themselves. It just rubbed on me and I continued their compassion. Besides, I enjoy keeping fish as others here do.

Well, there's quite a bit of research in the medical and psychological literature to support fish tanks (as well as other pets and plants) supporting good health and well-being. And I've definitely noticed a difference in myself since I started. And I can also x3 the notion of a sense of accomplishment and pride in my tank.

For me though, (and this may sound crazy, but hey... I gotta be me ) at this point, it's really about the relationship with my fish and their story. I have just the 29g puffer tank with 5 dwarf puffers (plus some supporting cast), and I've had them for nearly a year and a half. I feel like I really know their personalities, and get to watch their story play out. It's almost like a soap opera, except that I care about the characters.

Really for the little bit of effort and arguably little expense, I've seen significant returns in many areas of my life.

Hope that didn't sound too cheesy. It's late, and my filters are not working properly...

It keeps me out of trouble.....

For me its the fact that fish can do something mankind cant, they survive underwater with such ease. It seems so un-natural to us, but so normal to them. I guess the same can be said for birds flying through the air, but it wouldnt be very practical to have an Eagle in my basement.:p:

I think my favorite part about it is definitely how soothing it is just to sit and watch a fish tank, everything seems more graceful underwater.

I also really like the biological aspect of it, the challenge of creating a tiny ecosystem, it allows you to mix species and environments in a way most other pets don't; and then you get to sit back and watch it all play out.

I also love that it seems like there is always something to tweak and something new to learn, it never gets boring or repetitive.

I enjoy the artistic side of putting together a beautiful tank as well as raising and caring for the creatures within it. It also helps that it was my own choice of pet that my dachshund wouldn't obsess about killing. :headshake2: She only obsesses about the fish food now. :yuck:

It helps to prevent seizures for me and gives me something to do. Love my fish? NO, taking pride in their health and well-being? Yes.
