Why do you love fish?

I've been doing it for a long time and certainly enjoy the challenge of creating as natural environment for them as possible. I sometimes question the keeping of fish in such a relatively small space, but can easily justify it by telling myself if they remained in their natural environment they'd more than likely would simply become fish food for larger fish. Also very calming and therapeutic to watch. I also enjoy the hobby for what it is, and as much as I wish I could afford to restore classic cars, fishkeeping can be very rewarding and a LOT cheaper!

I keep fish to keep myself from spending money on my more expensive hobbies. I like the challenge of fish keeping in the aspects of breeding as well.

Fish keeping is also really my only hobby that my wife shows an interest in. We met years ago in one of my other hobbies, cars, but now that my car hobby has progressed she is afraid of it. LOL

I am GOD, mwahaha. No, just kidding, although that's my answer when people ask.

Fishkeep fulfills a lot of needs. I like the artistic value in setting up a tank that is pleasing to the eye and makes people go, wow, nice. I also love planning and researching tanks, organizing them, and maintaining them (yes, I LIKE maintenance). I love the massive variety of freshwater fish (haven't been bitten by the salt bug yet) and learning about them and where they come from. I'm looking at going overseas for a few years, so I'm considering what countries, and one of the questions is 'what kind of fish do they have?' Not a serious consideration, but a question I still ask every. single. time. I'd love to go to Thailand. I enjoy observing their behaviors and "learned" behaviors, how tankmates interact, how cichlids spawn, how co-specifics act, etc. I prefer interesting fish over pretty fish. It is also a hobby that is as expensive or as cheap as you make it, which is good for a college student on a budget. Plus, now I have a club I can interact with and a job that involves sharing my knowledge.

I agree with taysius, It's living art, plus the benifits of calming and easing stress. I had a tank as a kid, and it's part of my childhood I don't have to give up.

I inherited my first tank. Actually, I finally commandeered the tank -- it had been left behind by a former employee (who never took care of it) and was basically abandoned by the employee to whom it was left. I've always liked fish but never had any. At any rate, cleaning up that tank and saving its inhabitants became an obsession for me. It's been about 15 or 16 months since I laid claim to the tank and no one can believe it's the same tank at all. New substrate, new decorations (natural instead of fake), mostly new fish (all originals except one eventually died -- from old age and not from shock caused by cleaning up the tank), real plants, new filters and heater, etc. I worked on it slowly and tried to learn not only what to do but why and how before I made any changes. I found this site last June and boy was I glad! I've learned tons from people who know and are so willing to share their knowledge and skills and encourage newbies like me. In any event, I've become so hooked, I've set up four other tanks -- all small, but when I redo my house in a couple of years, I want to set up a 90-gallon Amazon biotope and 55-gallon Asian biotope. Then I can sit back and work like a dog for my fish in my retirement -- and, hopefully, keep making friends here.
