why does my fish spit his food back out sometimes?

If I drop some fish food granules into the tank, most of my fish work them in and out of their mouths like that.

If I moisten the granules first in a cup of water to make them soft, the fish just eat them.

I think, because of this, that they bobble the granules while they wait for them to soften in the water.

My theory on this is that it is their way of "chewing". They can't chew like we do, so they will repeatedly spit the food back out to break up larger pieces. If they don't like the food, they will just spit it out and then ignore it. JMO - makes sense to me anyway.
That makes really good sense. I've noticed my little Harlequins doing this and the bits they spit out are much smaller. One of them hits a big bite and spits it out, then the others zoom in and nibble up the little bits.

Dog likes it too!

I agree with the theories of (1) softening it (it's pretty "crunchy" straight out of the can, (2) smaller more manageable pieces, and definately (3) that they DO have a preference. Some of mine won't touch the orangish colored food, and gravitate only to the white. Others would probably eat a piece of you know what if you put it in the tank!

I will say, tho, that our dog loves the fish food,,, any color, size or softness! -- the pig! :)
