Why does my water stink??

Sorry AFG, but you are mistaken. Don't read hobby articles which are all too often written without any basis in fact, go to the scientific and technical literature to find out the facts. You are boosting mythology, which is rampant in this hobby anyway, and to me that is harmful, not helpful. There is a massive irreconcilable difference between fact and opinion.

And when I say something shocking and contrary to what everyone already "knows", it is generally because what everyone already "knows" is popular urban myth. Exactly like "non-iodized salt should be added to all FW tanks", and its corrollary that "iodized salt at common usage levels will kill fish"; or that "activated carbon will dump the material it has captured". Myths, one and all. But don't take my word for it, research the facts yourself. It involves a bit of work, but you might find it worthwhile.
 
I am not talking urban myths, or things like "one goldfish per 10 gallons" type of deal. I am talking about people who have books added to their name, people who are much more than you and I as far as expertise goes. I have a website, that doesn't make me any different that someone who doesn't. The stuff on my site is opinion, but most of which is backed by facts.

Its not a matter of me not believing you, as you have no reason to lie about such a thing. Its just that it takes more than what one or two people say to change the mind of what has been taught for decades.

I am not an expert on activated carbon, but if I may point out the fact that many RO systems, water purification units and city water treatment plants have used it for years. I surely doubt that if AC leeched the chemicals absorbed, they would not use it. Just my 2 cents.
 
Nice observation, but are we now talking about the EPA's standard for drinking water in the 80's, or are we talking about chemicals which fish can pick up on and which can be prove harmful to fish?

Standards for drinking water and what chemicals AC is removing is different that the standards for our aquarium water, in more ways that one.

I'm trying to find the truth too. And I will be reading more on 'Activated Carbon' because this thread has got the ball rolling. However, until I can find some kind of evidence for myself, that supports this I can't knowingly change what I've learned, and what I personally teach.

Thanks but if you've noticed nobody has raised a "stink" about this thread but you! haha...I always wanted to say that. :laugh:

But really, I'm not arguing. I wont speak for RTR or anyone else for that matter but I myself am not trying to fight. I respect everyones views and opinions and am open to new ideas and aspects of aquaria...which is why I have posted here, because I am curious. Thank you for your .02, it's much valued..... ;)

Think of activated carbon as a magnet, and the dissolved ions in the water as iron shavings. The shavings stick to the outside of the magnet but never enter. Eventually, they will also cover the surface of the magnet. In the cases of magnets, they don't lose their magnetic force, but in the case of carbon, it loses its ability to adsorb other dissolved ions.

Tightly packed carbon may however be able to remove suspended debris as well, just bacause of the fact that the debris will probably become lodged in the small spaces between each carbon piece much like a sponge.

So you may both be correct in different ways.
