Why is my betta changing colors?

I've had a male betta for awhile. When I first bought him, he was blue with white (can't find the word here) edges. As time went on, the white slowly began to turn red and here he is today.

He did sort of have a little red when I got him but the red has since expanded a lot.

I think it may be the food I'm feeding him. I was too cheap to buy betta pellets so I just fed him some "Xtreme" pellets that I got for free from Kensfish. Any ideas?
 
I had a pale coloured betta that developed more colour over time (went from almost white to a pretty blushing pink). I think it probably is related to food. Maybe you are feeding something that enhances colour (that's what I feed mine). In any case, I don't think it is a bad thing, it was probably lacking some nutrients before. :)
 
Better food, clean water, more activity, etc. All fish "color up" with good care, but betta's are particularly dramatic about it, I think. :)

It is quite normal for some bettas to change color like that. Nothing to worry about. I believe it has something to do with genetics, some special gene or something like that.
 
I never knew about the marble gene. That's pretty interesting.

I was worried because I'm importing some white platinum bettas and don't want them to start turning red on me... Regardless, I will change the food I'm going to feed the new ones.
