Why is my dwarf puffer so skinny?

I have bought 3 of those last fall, so it is now more than a year. My little skinny one is pretty tuff, even if he gets skinny quicly. I doubt it is parasites, I really think they were underfed. All they can eat for 2 minutes once a day was clearly less than they needed.

The only reason I fed once a day is because I feared for water quality, I heard bloodworms could add to algea problems, and here they are in a 10 gal. Pretty easy to lose control of water quality... Now I feed blodworm carefully from a cup using a pipette twice a day, the reddish water in wich they tawed is discarded. And I do 50% WC twice a week. It works for me and my two remaining puffers: they go after food as if they are starving everytime. And the leftovers give the shrimps a red brain for sometimes!

(The only Dp that did not make it got injured during cleaning time: it got stuck between under the syphon. He was stunned, got a little better after that, then he just vanished, I found it under a leaf, crooked, "swimming" in circles. Lesson learned: my guys go bezerk during cleanings and swim for their life like crazy... I am now carefull and a half during WCs... I felt like a bad mother-- even I am a man --for one week.)

I've started feeding him everyday with blood worms and I've also started transferring more snails from my Endler tank into his. He's voracious at every feeding. Poor thing, I guess he was just hungry all the time. I feel like a neglectful father starving his baby :headshake2: I don't think he has any parasites. He's pooping normal looking fish poop. Is there any other food I should be feeding him besides blood worms and live snails? I don't have the time or room to grow live food at the moment. Another thing, what's the protocol about introducing new dwarf puffers onto the scene? He's been the only dwarf puffer in this tank for about 4 months now and I'm sure he's marked his territory well. I'm assuming a group of them, like 2 or 3, would fair better than just 1.

Some more live or frozen foods will do him wonders. Shrimps as such make excellent addition. Besides, he needs different vitamins he can obtain by just eating different foods. I'd feed him once a day on daily basis.:)

You mean shrimp as in ghost shrimp or something similar? I once got him to eat some raw shrimp that humans eat. I chopped it up in small pieces and he went wild for it. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate for him to eat that so I stopped.

Raw shrimps are fine. In fact, I feed my loaches and sevs with them.

Good to know. This thread has taught me a lot. :)

To sidetrack for just a moment...We have a tank full of tiny puffers at the pet store that haven't been fed properly. They ignore flake food and most days that's all they're offered. I looked up information in a book and learned about them needing live foods, particularly snails, so I now make it a habit to transfer ramshorn snails from the plant tank. They snap them up in such a hurry that next I'll try feeding them krill or silverside chunks. Thanks for the info!

update me if krill work :), my pets store dp's just get the regular blood worm, snails from the 20 other tank treatment, and we only ever get 5 max in so as to be able to feed them!!
