why replace bio-filter media?

I have a fluval 205 canister for my 29g setup. I have read several places that says to replace the ceramic bio-filter media every 2-3 months. I'm aware of the need to seed the new media.

I'm not quite sure why this is needed (the replacement, i know why seeding is needed). Do the rings muck up and restrict flow?

I've run the fluval media in my DIY mini-sump on my other 29g for about 2 months and I haven't noticed any problem with flow, or them mucking up.
 
I have no clue. Unless it is physically breaking apart, I wouldn't. Maybe rinse them out in old tank water to clear them out if they are getting clogged.
 
Sounds like the manufacturer trying to get more of your $$$$
 
The problem with ceramic media is it does clog. It dont necessarily clog with waste but with dead bacterial cultures. Ceramic media will only be half effective at best over time than when it was new. Thus making it IMO a waste of money. That is why they say to replace it every 2-3 months. I have thrown all my Ceramic media out and replaced with sponges. Ceramic media will still be effective if it is rinsed but you are still going to have dead bacterial spots throughout the media.
 
thanks, I mostly got my info. from reading through manufacturers' manuals.

I might bag and use Schultz aquatic plant soil for filter media. It's made of small, inert fired ceramic pieces that are rather pourus, and at $7 a bag at home depot, it's well worth it for the volume you get.
