I am almost done fishless cycling my tank, and I have noticed this wierd film on the top of the water just sitting there. It looks oily. Is this bad? I have added ammonia to my tank for several weeks now, to help cycle it. I was wondering if any of you have had this similar "problem" in any of your tanks, and how you dealt with it.
And is it harmful to fish? Im getting my fish in a couple of days, and I really need to know.
thx in advance

It's normal and harmless AFAIK, I've read that it's protein buildup but don't quote me on that ;).
All my tanks have a film on the surface; they're planted tanks and I keep the surface disturbance to a minimum. If you're not injecting CO2, surface disturbance will help break it up. You can also remove it by laying a paper towel on the surface and peeling it off - the film will stick to the towel.

I strongly adivce on getting rid of oily film at the surface. Any film at the surface of water will reduce the O2 exchange.
