Wild plant collecting

In the pursuit of exploration and curiosity (definitely NOT cheapness... ) i was curious if anyone has had any experience collecting wild plants from the streams/rivers and lakes/ponds around them? Laws aside, id like to attempt to propagate some local species, that is, if they are there (we cant all live in the rainforest). Ive done some reading on google and aside from a list of invasive/noxious species i haven't had any luck finding a site that lists whats in the area. I live in California, more specificly the Bay Area, and if anyone from this area, or even another, has had any luck finding something worth growing, id like to hear from ya.

I don't personally have any experience with collecting, but some of the members over at aquaticplantcentral.com have. Here is the forum dedicated to that interest there.

Also in the forum are sections dedicated to two southern california plant clubs that have started recently.

My advice would be to make some contacts in the biology department of your local universities…. The people that REALLY know what’s going on are GREAT to have access too. Not to mention from my experience they are more than grateful to share their knowledge with interested parties…. Just go to the closest universities website and do some searching through the staff lists, probably someone in limnology (study of freshwater/inland waterways)

Snake, that section of the forums is pretty dead, but thanks for the link, its a great site overall. And good thinkin walker, ill have to try that. Thank you both for your replies.

Id still like to hear from anyone with some real experiece, if there are any out there.

I have done some random plant collecting locally when I have had the chance. I didn't follow any system, just went out and found what I could. So far none of them have worked out in my aquariums. Waterways are fairly cool up here in Vermont, so I suspect temperature may be an issue. I will continue to try though......
