Will 2 otos get lonely?

By the way, if anyone has an extra 20 gallon they could afford to ship to me.......
:lol2:
I wish... :shakehead:

Arrg, you guys are probably right. I think I'll just go for the guppies and shrimp. I don't want to overstock. Maybe someday when I can get a bigger tank... :) I really want to do this responsibly.

I'm so sorry! But, it's really good that you're trying to be so responsible. Seriously, you're a better person than I was when I first started keeping fish :evil_lol:
Here's a link to the AC page on stocking small tanks: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97203
Is there really no way you could get a 10 gal? The link above says that you could keep 4 pygmy cories in a 10.
But, the upside is that, once you do want to get a bigger tank, you'll have a healthy filter on the 5 gal that you can use to establish your new tank very quickly.

Keep your eyes on craigslist, and on the side of the road. I just saw a 30 gal acrylic tank in my neighbor's trash :eek3:
I would have taken it if I had room for another tank.....

Oh, I'd love a 10 gallon! Problem is, I'm a live at home college student with a crappy job Translation: I don't own my room and I have to money. :) The money is the biggest issue. With the bad economy, my hours have been cut from 20-25 to 8-12.... :( I actually priced out the approximate cost of a 20 gallon long (my dream tank), and to get everything new would be around 300$. Also, I live in Podunk (not literally) PA, so Its almost impossible to find nearby craigslist stuff.
Don't worry though... despite my love for catfish, I will wait till I get a bigger tank. Till then, it's snails, shrimps and guppies.
*sigh* :)

I am afraid one oto would starve in a 5 gallon tank let alone two...

Otos are very, very fussy about food and many of them refuse anything but soft green algae and diatoms. They will not eat fissidens or java fern or any other type of plant. Mine will not touch a vegetable and rarely, rarely touch an algae tab or any of the other fish food. A lot of people that keep otos have lots of plants growing so that the otos can suck soft algae and biofilm from the plants leaves...

Yup, agreed 100%. I was hesitant to put two in the ten, but it gets plenty of light and they've done well. They're always eatin' off the java fern leaves. Otos may not be your best option.

I hope no one minds my posting in on this question. I just purchased an Oto 7 days ago and am completely delighted with him/her. I have a 10 g. tank. I will add live plants shortly. Right now, I am feeding him blanched zucchini. He drags the piece to the back of the tank and munches. I want to add one or two more otos plus small clay pots for hiding. This little guy doesn't seem to hide. He is always out either eating, swimming around or hanging on the side of the tank.
What type of plants are best for the otos? Any other suggestions for their health? I purchased veggie algae wafers today. So far, he's not interested.

broad leaf plants, they will eat algae off the leaves, but not eat the plants. anubias are good. They will be much more active with two otos... to make oto food (algae) take a small, sterile container (jar, cup) and fill it with tank water, put some larger gravel in, and put it in the sun. You'll grow algae on the rocks, and can put them in your tank to feed the otos and pull other rocks out to grow more algae. something to keep in mind: in my experience two otos will eat much more than twice what one otto will.

That sounds like a terrific idea. I decided to use sand in my 10 g tank; so the gravel will be easy to scoop out. I love this little Oto; finicky like my four-legged cats!

I'm not sure if sand will work. I've never worked with it much; not sure if algae will grow on it. If not, just get some small pebbles. You'll want at least three days worth, more would be better. Make sure they are porous.

Yes. I understand. I have gravel leftover from my other tank. I've already started the gravel and tank water in the sun to see what happens. Meanwhile, the little guy is busy eating zucchini. thanks.
