will a micron filter clean up cloudy water?

Probably, but that doesn't mean it will fix the underlying problem.

I had access to a 75g FW cichlid tank in which I couldn't for the LIFE of me get uncloudy. So, I took a HOT magnum w/ micron and plopped it down.

Two days later, the water was crystal clear.

Two months later, I removed the HOT and guess what? Within a week, the water was passing cloudy again.

It helps, but micron isn't the complete answer.

Yes, they will clean the water. I learned about diatom filters here, and went out and bought a Vortex XL diatom filter. It works great after water changes... It's not an absolute must have item, but helpful for having even cleaner water. This filter is not intended for continuous use. Some have said this filter may help rid a tank that has Ich - and it does filter out particles that small...

I have serveral links I might post when I can.... :)

well the tank has been clear for almost 4 years and for about a 2months after the move, but just in the last few days i noticed the water was a bit cloady in the last few days. only thing i did different was instead of having bubbles from a powerhead i just turned it up to the surface( i was getting tired of the little micro bubbles that made the tank look dirty) after a few hours the water was crystal clear, so i doubt thats it?

Yes. I agree that a micron filter will clear up the water some, but the Magmun cartridges are expensive, apx $9.00 ea. I have 2 of them. They clog up easly and I have not found a good way to clean them. I also suggest a diatom. I have 3 of them.
Vortex does claim the D1 and LX models can be run continously, but it is not necessary to do so. The diatomous earth is very inexpensive. It will also clean the water to a higher clarity, (apx. 1to 2 microns) it will remove parisites, un-disolved minerals, solid waist algae, and some dis-coloration (depending on what causes the dis-coloration.
As for causes for cloudiness measure the nitrate level of the water and the Hardness (not Ph) High nitrate levels with real hard water will cause cloudiness. If this is the case only a water softner system can remove the disolved minerals which are at the molecular level. Water changes are the only way to reduce the nitrate levels unless you add a jungle of water plants.
