Will amano shrimp eat diatoms? I think that's what I have, and I already have bottom dwellars so I really don't want 3 more (ottos) So I was thinking of getting amano or cherry shrimp to take care of the brown algea, just for something a little different. Also, if I add a lot of live plants will that help with the diatoms?

Zebra snails (Neritina Natalensis) do an awesome job of eating algae, even the toughest stuff. It's pretty much all they do all the time. I have a couple in my tanks. The glass and ornaments look great now. Bonus is that they don't eat plants. :)

My amano shrimp, BTW, don't eat as much of it. They prefer to eat fish food.

I don't think that there is anything that eats diatoms that you'd put in your tank. I could be wrong. diatoms tend to go away after the tank is more mature anyway. In every tank I have started they have come for a week or two, then didn't survive.

plantgeek.net has an algae section which is proceeded by removal methods and includes what fauna will help with it.

Just to clarify. Zebra snails do eat diatoms. I've had this brown algae in my tanks since starting them up, and it's been more than 6 months now. When I first introduced the snails, you could see the "tracks" their teeth left when eating up the algae on the glass. They rarely stop eating...glass, ornaments, gravel, they do thorough work. :)
