will an amano eat its own shell?

really? I've never seen one eat anything that wasn't a plant. You learn something new everyday.
My Amanos all race to the front of the tank when I feed the fish - they'll steal a flake right out from under the fish's nose. I've seen them eat brine shrimp, daphnia, spirulina flakes, staple flakes, pellets, as well as algae in the tank. They pick at the sponge over the filter intake constantly and groom the plants - they seem to have a huge appetite for such little creatures :)

I have a crayfish for nearly 2 years now and I've read about how "keeping" the molted shell in the tank is very important because it's a good source of calcium to aid in "rebuilding" his new shell. I don't think I've ever witnessed it, but then again they're supposed to be nocturnal as I've never seen him eat any of the feeder guppies... but I know he is!

I've recently kept ghost, amano and bamboo/wood shrimps and I believe the same applies. I think I've seen my ghost shrimp eat their molt at times.

My amano's eat anything but algae. Well it seems like they do anyway. :rant2:

Terrestrial frogs and toads shed their skin as well--some daily, others monthly, but they all do it. Seldom seen, since it happens pretty quickly and they quickly consume the skin.
