my cories?

I have lost 3 of my cories since adding the angelfish, and also 2 of my Angels died. I have a 55g, well established, well planted tank with good water quailty. I am pretty sure that the first group of three angels had Ick, I treated it with salt and warmer water, but I still lost 2.

The surviving angel looks great now, better than when i bought it. After the Ick and treatment my stocking was, 2 Angels, 3 Cories and 12+ baby gups.

Then one more cory and 1 more angel died. So I waited a 10 days and got new 2 Angels and 1 more Cory(from a better pet store). They all seemed fine this morning, but when i came home a cory was dead.

Now my Questions
1)Is it possible that the Angelfish are killing the cories?

2)Am I overstocked? Should I add another Angel/Cory?

3) Did I treat the Ick long enough?(7 days)

So its so long I just wanted to included anything relevant.

1. doubtful, angels have very small mouths and cories have quite hard skin
2. i don't think the stocking amount is the problem, but that you added so much bioload at once (more than doubled what you already had in the tank). you probably are going/have gone through a mini-cycle, which may be what mysteriously kills your fish every time after you add them.
what exactly are your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate readings?
do you test the water after adding fish to the tank?
how often do you do water changes?
how long has the tank been 'established', and what has been living in there during that time?
3. i have not had to treat for ich, but 7 days sounds sufficient. what were the symptoms? usually ich infestation is pretty obvious.

you should check your water parameters. pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc.

what is the temp of the tank.

I doubt the angels killed anything..short of baby guppies.

there is something else going of if angle and cories are dying.

what is your water change schedule? are you using conditioners?check the source too.

generally you should treat ick for 14-21 days.
in most cases the ich is only treatable in the free swimming stage

Amm:0 ph 7.5 nitrate 10 nitrite 0

I do 25%-30% weekly, my tank was fishless cycled for like a month then with plants, then i added adult guppies from my 10 gallon 3 at a time til there were 9 total. There for three months I worked on my plants before adding the Cories 2 at a time til there were 4 total. Then i had to rescape the tank so they had better hiding places. So after my plants starting filling out I bought the angels.

I did have a temp problem and most of my plants started dying, but tis was before the Angels and the cories survived.

so now that you all have got me thinking, I think that temp drop and the ick weaken then and they still died after i fixed the problem. The mini-cycle sounds reasonable, but I dont think so because I up the amount of weekly water changes after adding fish and test my water.

ick is a different beast altogether.

temp drop will stress the fish as will bringing the temp back up too quickly

what is the temp? how much did it drop?

ick can cause a lot of stress and the added stress may allow other infections to take place(bacterial comes to mind) also ick can infect the gills..you may not see them here. and in bad enough cases oick will kill.

adding fish can cause mini cycles..but if you have a healthy bio filter it should adjust quickly as long as you don't add too many fish.
also in a planted tank the plants will use any ammonia up fairly quickly, depending on how heavily planted the tank is and how long the plants have been established.

sounds like you may have had a lot of issues that occured ina combination, that may have lead to the eventual demise of those fish.
hang in there and remember to quarantine all new arrivals of livestock.

Thanks star and chicken!

The temp dropped from 80 to 72. And the tank is not heavily planted but there are a lot of plants, to give you an idea on how many: 15 plants from bulbs, and 50+ stem plants.

I think i have learned my lesson. does anyone know how many adult angels will live comfortably in my 55g?

you can keep 6 but if they pair up you'll need to move some fish around.

I keep several angels including wild peruvian scalare.

I currently have three breeding pairs with hopes of getting a pair out of the peruvians..
I am also attempting to pair up wild with domestic.

angels are impressive in groups..but the caveat to this is with more fish you increase the chance of a pair forming..angels become very territorial when paired up and very aggressive.

Thank you! Ill wait to buy more til I clear space for a couple of 29g in case of a pair.
