I bought some driftwood, the type that is light and screwed to a slate type piece. I was wondering how long I can expect it to soak it before it sinks. Also will it ever fully sink where it rests completely on the substrate? I read somewhere that it might hover slightly off the substrate and that it could be like that forever.

you usually bury the slate part to help hold it down in the tank while the wood becomes waterlogged.

I can't boil it because it's two big, it's about 2 feet across and I can't put any rocks to hold it down because there's not enough room on the slate and they keep slipping out. I'm just letting it float on the water until it sinks.
I let my 3ft peice soak in a garbage can for 2 months, it sank fine in my tank when I put it in. Its oak by the way. I changed the water once or twice a week so some of the tannis would leach out.
I bought some from Drs. Foster & Smith and it sank in a day. There are many factors that go into how long it will take and whether it will ever completely sink; type of wood, whether it's been boiled, age, etc.
From what I've read here and what I've experienced firsthand, it's just impossible to know... sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't...
