Will my desk hold my tank?

I think you'd be pushing your luck. That is a lot of weight spanning 4'. The pressure on the glass could be too much. From what I learned about fishtank stand design, there should be supports every 2 feet. So the centre blocks stay. Her design is simple and would work. Don't forget the styrofoam!

Nope...not at all...google the pressure tables for joists and span.....most DIY stands are vastly over engineered for no reason and excessive expense.

^^ I was talking about the foam for a cinder block stand, several people and few sites recommended using foam between the plywood and the tank. I've given up on my desk at the moment and decided on the idea of this cinder block stand, I did a drawing of it on page 3 I believe.
how bout a 2 for 1 deal here... this vid is how to make a background but if you're careful you could have enough foam left for under the aquarium also.

being a carpenter in my first life i will have to agree with the strength of particle board (mdf) as stated by tay 690. it is stronger initially than regular wood. over time it degrades though and falls apart very quickly when wet.

MDF and particle board are not the same thing. I too, am a carpenter/cabinet maker since 1996. I challenge anyone to prove that particle board is stronger than solid wood or plywood.

hey I ain't no carpenter plumber electryguy = just plain can't do nuddin! but I had a student's desk & I placed cinder blocks under the left side & on the right side outside the desk, then laid 3/4" plywood cut to size a bit longer than the desk. then I centered the tank, perfecto! no probs, no sags, no tragedies. Oh yes, there was one tragedy. I had to give it up in my divorce!

Okay so I think I have a good list on what I need for the cinder block stand. But I'm still trying to figure out if I can use 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch and what kind of wood (it will be painted so it doesn't have to be pretty).

I planned to make the stand into five parts. One set would be the bottom with a slab of plywood, on both ends of it with have a L shape with a T shape in the middle for the cinder blocks. So it would look something like this: |_ _|_ _| the 'open' end would be where the from of the take would sit.

Because of the length of the blocks the plywood is going to be cut at 48" long and 24" wide, giving the tank coverage all over. (Hopefully)

I'll try to make four sets of the L & T design sections, that way if I need to move the tank, I can take it apart in sections using liquid nail to hold the cinder blocks to the plywood.

xD ya I've been trying to think of everything.

3/4 inch plywood or at minimum use 5/8. If you want it to look pretty get a sanded sheet of either, but it will cost a bit more.
Good luck and post pic's.

The weight alone will hold it together and it will not topple over...you do not need the liquid nails.

I wouldn't? I suppose I could set it up and test it out before I make anything finally, though I was thinking that I could make it into sections in case I would need to move it, but I don't know if the 3/4 plywood would be able to hold the 6 cinder blocks on it.
