Will my floor be able to take it?

Hey, I live in a well built apartment on the 6th floor. What would be the absolute largest tank in terms of gallons I could get for a strongly constructed apartment? I probably wont get a VERY big tank but I would like to know my limitations. Thanks!
IMHO I think you need to discuss this with your landlord. S/he, or the building owner, are the only ones who can tell you what you can put in there. If you just go ahead and put a tank in there and something happens, you could be looking at a nasty lawsuit.

My 2 cents

Youo may want to look into several factors..

First,
The cost of Insurance in case the tank breaks!

Second,
The Age of the building.

Third,
check with landlord to see if there is a limit on size.

Remember, a full tank can run anywhere from 12-15 pounds per gallon! Would you want that dropping in on your head?

not to beat a dead horse, but there are too many factors to cinsider in this. Size and spacing of floor joists, bearing points below, location of tank compared to bearing points, and on and on. (by the way, I design houses so that's where this comes from). Things like age of building and location of building would be big factors, because that would tell you more about the codes enforced during construction.

As a side note, if you live in a newer building (10ish yrs) I'd say you are fairly safe. Most buildings that age could hold a waterbed safely.

Please check with landlord. Just cause floor can hold weight doesn't mean he will let you, and I had a few landlords say after a certain size tank I had to have renters insurance.

Ditto checking with the landlord. Here, anything over 20gallons is not allowed.
Also... you should have renters insurance anyhow...tank or not.

hmm well my landlord is a #%@%@ and he doesnt care about anything. All of the elevator licenses have expired 5 years ago and one of the 3 elevators (15 floor building) hasnt been working for 2 and a half years! He isnt the type of landlord thats around and I probably see him like once a year. I probably wont be able to discuss this with him.
