i recently adopted a tank and thers a pleco in it... i was rrdecorating the tank. it looks too me like the pleco stays under the log all the time unless i turn all the lights off.... and if i turn them on he quickly runs back ONLY to the log. but he has a bunch of new rock in the tank he can hide under but i dont want to stress him and kill him.... what do u guys think?

what type of pleco is it?
how old is it?
what do you feed it?
Is the water safe for the fish?

A large majority of plecos like a dark cave to hide in and will only come out for a feed, yet they dont feed once a day they like to eat a bit every so often so you should see him come out. Make sure you are feeding correctly, another thing they like is a bit of current in the water this somtimes draws them out for a bit of a swim around the tank. The fish may just need some time to adapt to its environment.

What size is your tank? Plecos are funny fish, very habitual. Once they find a place they like, that's it. No convincing them to move. Are you wanting to remove the log, or just move it?

My 16 inch pleco Rufus, "hides" on one the corner overflows all day long.

i think the pleco is abou a 1 1/2 years old. my tnak size is 55 - 60g, the wierd thing is the girl who gave me the tank said she never feed him.... but i would drop algee pellets right next to the wholeof the log and he never comes out to eat it just disinigrates. oh ya i have a pump in my tank to to keep a flow of water going too. now the temp of the tank is a problem im having. i actually posted a a question up for that and decided im going to test it once again then if it doesnt work ill get a new one. i try to keep it around 75degrees.

How big is it? For a 11/2 year old it should be 10+ inches, at least. Growth maybe stunted if it wasn't being feed properly.

Plecos come out to eat at night. Try shrimp pellets or sinking wafers, not algae wafers. As plecos get older, they prefer more protien. Also try fresh veggies, blanched zucchini.

All the above info is good...but a couple of more things to think of:
If the tank has been moved and reset up, and as you say you are doing "interior decorating"...that's all upsetting to the pleco and he will hide where he feels safe until things settle down and he gets used to it.

If he is not used to being paid attention to..it may take a while for him to get used to it.

He'll get used to the rocks..and I hope you do feed him some better food. He may be stunted as suggested if has not gotten good food before. He may not take it at first, but keep up your efforts until he does. Try different things...the fresh veggies might be even more attrractive. Do you have any driftwwod in your tank? Plecos need some wood fiber in their diet. Is the log real wood? if so..great!!

I adopted/rescued a 6" pleco that was being kept by a neighbor in a mayonaise jar.

It was almost 4 weeks ago, and it was only 2 days ago that I saw him coming out of his hide. He took a empty log decoration as home and I could see was his caudal fin. I looked ot it until it moved just to know he was still alive.

You put the neighbor in the mayo jar, yes? Please? :rant2:

No. He is way too big to fit there. However, he gave tge pleco to me as soon as he knew I had a big tank. At least he showed common sense and knew that mayo jar was not good.
