will pleco's new home kill him?

I don't know if this applies to the larger sized plecos, but after worrying many hours about my albino bristlenose plecos (they max out at about 5 inches) I realized that they hide for weeks sometimes before a growth spurt. I was very worried about one of mine and put him into a 29 gallon tank because I didn't want him to have to compete with his larger growing companion for food. Well, after about 4 weeks he's out and about and his shape is beginning to change and his whiskers are beginning to come in, and he's eating like there's no tomorrow. Yeah!!! I wanted to move him back into the bigger tank this weekend, but the 29 gallon developed ick because of a malfunctioning thermometer, I think. So, I'm treating for that now. Anyhow, that's my story.
Take care,
Mary.

i have 2one is 4yrs or 6 and 1is less then 1yr. But they do it all the time im pretty sure its no problem.

Take nursies advice a 10" pleco will not be satisfied with with tank algae or tablets as its main food source. Id recomend trying zucchini or cucumber to begin with, slice it in quaters then wrap it up and put it in the freezer over night ( this helps soften the veggie ) then tie it down to a rock or somthing heavy maby use an elastic band. Take it out after 24 hours if its un eaten then try again with a new piece. As nursie said if its never eaten veggies before it may need some time to recognise the food so keep trying and same goes for the algae tabs. Also you should have a few plants in the tank :hang: Good luck and keep us posted.

you can also put it in a bowl of tank water and nuke the veggies for about 30 seconds to a minute to soften them up and tie them to a rock to make them sink.

Different types of plecos have different dietary needs -- some need more meat than veggies-- and some need different types of wood. Although this is probably your common everyday pleco, it wouldn't hurt to try to ID it so we can make sure he gets the food he needs.

Can you go to www.planetcatfish.com and see if you can ID the pleco?

If it's not a common, or Trinidad, there is a thread in the Bottom Feeders forum on Pleco Dietary needs. Check there and if there is no reference to your pleco, post. Someone will help you out.

If it is a common pleco, then everything said here is all well and good. Commons are not fussy. They just need some sort of wood and veggies. Shrimp or carnivore sticks are also good for them and you can spike the veggie with them so he gets some meat in his diet.
