Will Prefilter Silence a Noisy HOB From Sucked-Up Bubbles?

Oh, here's something I also meant to ask you, Dudley...do you keep your AquaClears on low or high flow, or somewhere in the middle? Seems my research has indicated that these HOBs run better on the lowest flow setting (assuming debris is being sucked up through the intake stem at this setting) because the water in the chamber gets filtered and refiltered multiple times; I am running a 110 on my 60 gallon along with a second HOB on the other side, an Aqueon QuietFlow 75, and it seems like even on the lowest flow rate setting, this filter pumps out a ton of water for my two goldfish in there right now...
Oh, well, then makes sense; yeah, my 110 is on a 60 gallon with a secondary filter on it too, so it seemed like the lower side of the flow rate was more ideal...
Having a bit of an issue with the filter (an AquaClear 110) that I put the Fluval prefilter on...seems we're getting a ton of waste from the goldfish and other debris floating around the water column, apparently not being sucked up by the 110's intake because the prefilter's on there. What's weird is that our other filter, an Aqueon, doesn't seem to be picking up the debris, either; both filters are unobstructed, I checked.
Should I remove the prefilter from the AquaClear and find another way to deal with the bubble bar beneath it?

I would remove the pre-filter and move the bubble bar so it doesn't interfere with the filter intakes.

Aside from the whole "fry not being sucked up by the filter" angle, which I totally understand, I don't see what the point of the prefilter is if it's not sucking in solid waste material, uneaten food, etc.; I mean, I see what people mean when they say they simply rinse the sponge off during water changes and such, removing much of the gunked-on debris, but if the prefilter isn't allowing waste to be sucked in, what's the point?
Anyway, I'm thinking of maybe covering the area of the bubble bar that's directly under the intake with a heavy mound of substrate to block the bubbles there, as there is really no other place to move the bars in this ridiculously narrow, deep tank...

Personally, I would move the AC intake toward the tank center & maybe add an extension or 2 to the intake. You could also duct tape off those weak center bubble wand places, you can clearly see where I mean.
I can't move the AC's intake any further to the center; there's a brace there separating the two halves of the tank. Also, this picture that I provided -- which I think you're referencing -- is from a setup YEARS ago.
But with that being said, I COULD seal off the area that's being sucked into the intake with the duct tape -- are you sure tape can be used in water?
