Will red volcanic rock hurt snails?

i bought some of that lava rock from a lowe's near me. I was told it would be inert but after washing it I did the vinegar test and it bubbled. Just be safe and test even if other people have found it to be safe.

Could also be air trapped inthe lava rock causing the bubbles.

it was much more active fizzing than escaping air, but I might give it another try some time and submerge it. I tried it on several sample rocks and all fizzed =/ Dunno.

I have heard that vinrgar can react with a lot of stuff that is non toxic so that is why it is not a real realiable test.

I thought the vinegar test just reacted to certain types of rocks, like what they were comprised of. Rather than what was on it, could be caused by it, etc?

Or is it an accurate and usable test? (Don't know, never tried it. But if it works, hey! one more thing I can use! lol)

I was going to start a new thread about lava rock and snails until I found this one. This month I built a rock wall out of red lava rock from Lowes (the grill stuff) and had a horrible experience. This will eventually be a shrimp tank but I wanted to get the thing going for a few months to work out any bugs before I added the shrimp. I am so glad I did this. I stocked the tank with three Endler's and a handful of Malaysian trumpet snails. After two days the snails were all dead, insides hanging out, littering the tank floor. The Endler's had clamped fins and poor coloring. I moved them to the main tank and they're fine now. I think something is leaching out of the red lava rock that killed the snails. I can't think of anything else that could have caused it.

The lava rock sold at LFS is harmless and inert. There's a possibility that small baby snails could get stuck in the nooks and crannies, but that's about it.
