Will sand work in a 29gal. setup stock with Hatchets ,neons and little tetras and some small invertebrates? I never used sand before and like the look of silica sand. I dont have the lights for plant life so Im using fake plants for now. I have a nice big piece of driftwood I putting in there. My tap is good with ph at 6.5. SO sand or no sand? Thanks for your time TOM A.

Sand is fine but it may clog your water filter motor-rotor. It happened to me with a bio-wheel penguin where particles od sand came up the filter and stopped the whole process. Once all oxygen is gone from the sand, you may be OK. Be careful with gravel cleaning.

rinse out the sand very very well. when you put it in the tank, it's easiest if you turn off the filters and take out half the water. put the sand in with a big cup, redecorate, and wait for all the sand to settle. then take a small flat dish or shallow soup dish and push it into the sand. when you add the water to refill the tank, pour it into this dish - it will keep the sand from going all over and causing bare spots. then when the tank is filled, wait for all the sand to settle (solid particles - water may be cloudy for a couple days) and turn your filters back on.

don't go any more than 1 to 1 1/2 inches deep, otherwise pockets of anaerobic bacteria will build up and produce dangerous gases.

Wow, this is exactly what I'm doing right now. Sand, inverts, neons and possibly hatchets. Great minds think alike huh?
