Will tap water kill algae?

Hey everybody,

My tank currently has an outbreak of cladophora. I've been removing any gravel that I can see has the algae and putting it in a bucket, and then letting it sit in hydrogen peroxide for a day or two. However, I don't have bottles and bottles of the stuff. So, I was wondering, could I just put the gravel in a bucket of tap water to kill the algae? Would the chlorine in the water kill the algae? I doubt it, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

I have no idea whether the chlorine/chloramine levels in your tap would be enough to kill algae, but if you want more chlorine you could always add chlorine bleach. Just be sure to rinse with plenty of dechlorinator before putting it back in the tank, of course. Good luck!

When we need bleach for a lab experiment (I'm a chem prof) we by clorox brand - that's as good as it gets!
 
simple answer to your question is no... bleach will do it, as will boiling the gravel and no clorine problems
 
So would the person just dump bleach all over it and rinse their hearts out of the gravel?
Or would a mixture be better? 1:3 bleach water?
 
20 parts water to one part bleach is good.
