I just got a fairly large snail to help with my algae in my 10g betta tank, this may be a dumb question :duh: , but I haven't had snails in a long time! Will he crawl out of the tank or do they need to stay in water? The lid is not on all the way because my heater went out and I'm using one that doesn't fit so the lid is kind of slanted across the top, thats why I ask

most wont leave- theyll stay close to their food source. some however, may need to lay eggs on the inside of the tank just above the water line, buts thats about it as far as i know.

aquatic snail

Aquatic snail -- not likely to leave the tank to go cruising across the carpet!

LOL I didnt' think so, but like I said my lid is not on all the way and he (it) went right for the top of the tank when I put it in :duh: !! By the way, the only fish in the tank is the betta (might have to share his reaction later) and the betta eats all of his food before any sinks. Would flakes be a good thing to toss in for the snail or is something else more ideal since it would be food just for the snail?

I don't think it will go far!!!

Most stick close to food, but, as well as loveing the water like a little air.
I'm no expert and am just going by the snail's which my mate from a we'll know (Marine), Aquarium in Glasgow goes by. He has his tank half water and varied rock's to just above water level. They seem to go back and fourth.

Have you any idea of what you have?

Type of Snail?

No idea, it was labeled "snail"!! figures... It is about as big around as a quarter and probably about an inch or so thick, kind of a pale yellowish tan color and it has a much paler body and long feelers. Him and the betta are all alone in the tank!

Have you given him somewhere to go "just above", the water line and a little way........... say 3" from the top of the tank?

They seem to like this. Going from the different area's. If they have an area below and above..JUST.....they thrive!!

I'll ask my mate 4 more info, as he love's them. Have to wait till morning though!!! I'm in Scotland, and it's 03:29!! If you tank is full to the max they may try to go further, not to escape just for air, as i said they like the option.

If you only have a BB (Beautiful betta...:), you can afford to drop a couple of inch's in depth to keep your snail happy. Just keep the waterline lower, to keep your snail happy. I'd say 4" max, to keep yout BB and your snail happy, and have them thrive, which is what we all want for out Aquababes. I'll get a hole of my mate in the morning and P.M you, if that's ok?

Hope this help's!!

It doesn't have that much roaming room, but I can take a little water out to give it some more space! Thanks Sara!
