I have seen another member do this but i wanted to know if it would work.its going to be 100* + for 5 days straight and i need something to cool off my tanks.i have tried the water bottle method but on a 29G thats a lot of water bottles i would need.So what i saw was this

1.take a tub and fill with water then freeze
2.take a coat hanger and insert one end into the ice and one end into the water.
3.Wrap the tub with plastic (when it starts sweating)
4.Then insulate the outside of the tub.they said to use a sleeping bag since it holds the cold in.

Would this work?i can't find the post anymore

In theory metal is a great conductor and the point here is to use the wire hangar to conduct the cold from the ice into the tank. It would work in theory but you would need a lot of metal surface area to get any noticeable change in temperature.

On a large scale I would say yes it work. I havent tried it myself, only know the theory, so I cant say how it would work for aquaria.

Why not use a larger bottle such as a soda bottle or a gallon jug of water. Sure it will displace more water but I think that would be better then the smaller ones. Or just float the tub. I would think it would be more efficient then a coat hanger.

If you have room in your freezer, you could also use dechlored water to make ice cubes up to whatever size you needed and just drop one or many of those in the tank so you wouldnt have to worry about topping off.

we regularly have days at 100 or so unless your home has no cooling you r best bet is icecubes floated in the tank depending on the size of the tank i wouldnt worry too much about it overheating
