Well my sis says she was spraying windex around, not directly, my drifwood piece I had out. She also tells me this after I put the piece under water in my aquarium for it to soak. So my question is what should I do? I really don't want to replace the piece of drifwood, because I really like it but I also know how porous and fragile it is. And also would it contaminate everything in my tank, including gravel if it was contaminated with windex?

If she didnt directly spray the wood it should be fine. My gf always sprays that oust lysol stuff in the living room and it always gets behind the lights on my water and there is a film on top for a few hours/days. Never had any casualties though.

I would be wary, because as you said, wood is porous. It will hold onto any Windex if it has been exposed. Windex is a lot more toxic to large animals than Lysol, which is designed to kill microscopic organisms.

I would think that boiling the driftwood for a long time (at least a couple hours) and changing water often would help get those chemicals out. Not sure, though, so I hope someone else has a recommendation. I would err on the side of caution and not put it back in the tank until someone can tell you definitively yay or nay.

Next time, tell your girlfriend NEVER to spray Windex or other chemicals by your fish tank. If she wants to clean the glass, mix up a dilute solution of vinegar or lemon juice and leave a spray bottle of the stuff next to your aquarium. Label it "Safe Aquarium Cleaner - NO CHEMICALS" or something like that. That stuff works just as well and is not toxic :)

I would have to agree with plah831. You never want to add any type of toxic chemicals to your tank or you will most likely end up hurting or killing your fish.

I would biol the water as stated but do not put it back into your tank right away. I would put it in a different container to allow the toxins to soak out of the water. Just make sure to change that water often. Others may also have better ideas.

I think I will wait and see how my fish react to it. I don't think there could have been much or any windex sprayed on my stuff from where it was standing and where she was spraying, so I'm just going to see how it goes.
