Windows 7

Pet...Is it the full version you have, or the upgrade?

To be able to do an inplace upgrade to Win7, you can only do it via these operating system paths...

Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional
Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate

..otherwise, yes, its a clean install...

If you do a clean install, it wont format your drive. It will rename your existing windows directory to windows.old and copy all your old profile and data structure into that directory ( which enables you to copy it back after the install, but, programs do need to be re-installed ), then it install windows into a new windows directory.
 
Common sense, you don't wanna lose your info in case of something happens. Start from scratch is the better for sure IMO.
 
I recently purchased a laptop from Toshiba as well. I'll be getting Windows 7 soon from mail.. I can't wait to use it. Windows Vista is pissing me off like mad dog..

Linux is all well and good, but for the average user it is a complete pain in the ***!! I have been using Ubuntu for a while now on secondary / back up computers, and it never fails to amaze me how incredibly annoying it is to do simple things such as install a program.

Don't get me wrong, it is a very stable OS, but until it can be user friendly for grandma with no experience of computers its never going to be a widely used OS.

On the other hand, Vista is really driving me insane on my wife's laptop, pretty sure we are going to have to upgrade to Win 7 just to be rid of Vista.

I didn't buy it but I would be purchasing the upgrade, it's the only one I can find. So I am currently running Vista Home Premium and would upgrade to 7 Home Premium does that mean I can just pop in the upgrade, let it do it's thing and I will have the Windows 7 or do I still need to backup all my informatio and reinstall all programs?

As with any upgrade, its always best practice to backup your data before running the upgrade itself...just to be safe and sure...I see no reason why the upgrade should not go successfully...did a few upgrades in through out the beta testing without any problems..
