Windows 7

hey blemo... support from MS will end with XP I think it's this year

Pet...Is it the full version you have, or the upgrade?

To be able to do an inplace upgrade to Win7, you can only do it via these operating system paths...

Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional
Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate

..otherwise, yes, its a clean install...

If you do a clean install, it wont format your drive. It will rename your existing windows directory to windows.old and copy all your old profile and data structure into that directory ( which enables you to copy it back after the install, but, programs do need to be re-installed ), then it install windows into a new windows directory.

So just to recap...if I upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium it should be an easy upgrade without erasing my hard drive? Not to say I wont back anything up though.

That is true, but your programs will need to be reinstalled. The old installation will be in a new folder named, windows.old .

I'm just a little weary of any new Microsoft operating system... XP has been the only one moving in the right direction since NT. Beyond that they seem to make more backwards steps.

95, 98, 00, ME, Vista --- all horrible horrible operating systems.

From all I've read 7 is Vista without all the horrible bugs, sluggish performance, and "touch screen" abilitly... pah I don't want to touch my screen thank you.

I'd just as soon stay with XP on the machines that have it- I hate Vista- 7 is Vista without Vista problems.

Well 6 discs later I am still backing everything up, I managed to locate all the installs for the programs that are a MUST HAVE. So hopefully my backup will be complete before I have to go to work and I can install Windows 7 tonight. Man I hope this is the right decision. If it messes up my computer, Niko your guppies have had it :)

World ends in 2012 anyway so no worries lol

The world won't end in 2012. Microsoft has a patent out on earth's destruction and has said they won't use it until 2015 at the earliest.

God wouldn't dare mess with Bill Gates lawyer.

I am going to feel as though it is the end of the world if this installation doesn't work right.
