Windows XP Service Pack

sp2 was the start of the problems my pc is currently exibiting...
pc froze part way through installing sp2, reboot and spent about 3 hours having the pc restore the original settings, find hardware and other wise get back to working order
then when wife installed latest driver for video card games that previously ran fine now freeze if anything else is done on the computer. I can't look up something on the web and get back to my game because the game will freeze.
some times on startup when entering password for user account the desktop will not show even though normal programs can be heard initializing.
but I will have to say that the hd was not reformated at any time and has remnants of 3 operating system upgrades and we didn't have a firewall when we first hooked up to the web and recently let our virus definitions subscription run out, but that is back up.
so once I obtain a disc of the programs on this computer which was given to me without such I will be reformating the hd and reinstalling everything to clear up some of the problems
