Newton Falls, OH
this is absolutly weird. ive been looking at red ramshorn snails, i love them they look awsome. but i dont really have a place for them. well last night, i fliped over a shell in my 10g tank with my caudopuncts in it. and there on the back of the big shell. was a little red thing. i plucked it off and put it in a jar. sure enough, it was a red ramshorn. i dont know where it came from cuz ive never seen it before. and i havnt introduced anything to that tank for months. i dont know how i havnt noticed it before. its a pretty good size so im wondering where it came from. weird as hell right. well now i want some, i need a place for them.....

are they asexual or will i need another to get more of them?

i only had one to start with,...lol then 10 thousand later,......lol you only need 1 they do it themselves,..lol

oh i thought they needed a mate to breed

Well, unless they have mated previously, they will need another mate to help them exchange sperms and start breeding. Weird concept with hermaphrodites huh?;)

I started with 1 that I deliberately asked for. It turned out to be 2 and then HUNDREDS. LOL. They have done a good job as tank maintenance but they can take over if you are a heavy feeder as some of us tend to be. LOL. Mine are now under control with a few mated pairs of Assassin snails.

oh. well im assuming that he came in on an egg and i dont see anymore of them, so i dont think ill have anymore.

how big do they get? hes about pea size.

They can get about 3/4" diameter.

All you have is a color variation of a regular brown ramshorn. It may have come in as a very small snail on something you added, or if you have other snails a baby may have just expressed a recessive trait. You can easily breed it with a brown ramshorn (there are a couple species though) to get more snails. Some may be red, and if you cull the others aggressively enough you could end up with a red population. If none of the offspring are red, let them breed another generation and you might still get some.

congrats on your find' , what kind of egg did you bring into the tank ??

I am sure thier are plenty on here that would give you all reds, or all blues if you just ask, usually just pay shipping , most like me have way too many !! I have some loaches coming in next week to eat' all my snails ... YEA ~~ :) lol ~~ so if you want a few, let me know I would be glad to send you whatever colors you want for cost of shipping .
