I believe wood, and possibly all airstones, make more of a fizz type of bubble in salt water due to the increased density of the water.

You may be a hockey fan but obviously not a Bruins fan, cdawson. There wasn't a single soul in bean-town that had a problem with Ray leaving. Sure, it was weird but the guy wanted to have his name etched into that beloved cup. It takes a special kind of team to win a cup and the Bruins weren't the team that was going to happen with. He knew it, the team knew it, the management knew it and the fans knew it. He played his heart out for 21 seasons for a town that loved him. He won it with Colorado, in storybook fashion, and all us B's fans were smiling from ear to ear. Do you remember?.....who did Sakic immediately hand the cup to raise before raising it himself?.......yup. One of the ultimate classy acts in sports history, IMO.

Bourque's son used to go to Cushing Academy which is about 10 minutes away from my house. Like a moron, I never went to see him play.....or should I say, went to see who was in the stands watching him. (insert head banging against wall smiley here)

Anyway, I love the way wooden airstones look in marine tanks. I cant tell you how many different airstones I bought as a kid hoping to find the one that made the "fizz" in a freshwater tank. The guy at the LFS finally told me what the deal was after spending probably $50 on various stones.

If its the bubbles then put a kink in the pipe to slow ti down :idea2:

IMHO, that's a bad idea. Kinking the hose will cause back pressure, which could destroy the pump.
If it's the noise of the bubbles, I'm guessing the pump is more powerful than you want it too be (ie, too many bubbles coming out). You can purchase a multi-line valve for a few dollars; get one designed for two airlines. open the one for the airstone up all the way, and then slowly open the other valve to bleed off some of the air. The more you open it, the more air will be let out into the room, which means less is going into the tank. Voila, less bubbles, no back pressure.

If the air pump is noisy, try putting the pump on a 24 hour timer were it will only run during the daytime or move the pump in an ajacent room and drill a hole in the wall and feed the air tubes through the wall and the to your aquarium. That way the pump is in another room so you can probanly sleep.

If the airstones are noisy, then use some gang valves to regulate air flow.
