I'd use a chunk of this 10x10x1" foam I have lying around, cut it to fit the inside of the tank, and run the bubbler tube behind/over the top to make a mattenfilter for the shrimp. It wouldn't look bad, and the inverts would love picking at whatever grew on the sponge surface.
As a bonus, it would free up the food jar again...
