I found this site that talked about some red worms that go into the fishes anus and kill them. You have to get some sheep dewormer to get rid of them

Those would be camallanus worms, internal parasites. Probably not your culprit. The worms are actually quite long, but just the tips protrude from the anus. In that stage they don't swim or free float, they deposit eggs in the water and retreat back into the fish. Their larval stage are floaters I believe, but look different.

And yes, pretty fish and LUCKY to have a caring parent!!

Synodontis ocellifer - very nice medium sized catfish. Very long-lived.
