went to home depot to find a few items that i have read about here in the forums that people say are readily available but they didn't have anything i wanted. Namely pool filter sand or southdown playsand, any pvc piping or fittings, and egg crate. And the worst part is nobody had a clue about anything i was asking for.

my depots are fine but im starting to like lowes more.

southdown sand is only in about 10 percent of the homedepots. i think in the north east US and eggcrate is just light diffusers for flourescent lights. yea some of the plumbing stuff gets all mixed up but the guy we talked to knew a lot and even gave me tips on setting up my bulkheads.

Mine is not as bad as yours but I have been having a lot of trouble lately with no price tags on stuff or not being found in the computer. The worse part is, the checker tries to call for a price check and no one answers. I just said forget it- I don't need them that bad and went to their competitor, Menards, which at least has a manager by the checkouts and makes sure a price is found fast if there is a problem.

well, i looked it up and found out that egg crate should be in the lighting section so i just went back to home depot and still didn't find it throughout the whole section. so i asked someone again and he showed me where they had it. i guess it was just a case of bad employees when they said they didnt have it.

Uh, only Home depots in the north east US have southdown play sand. And even then its rare.

All Home Depots have plumbing and eggcrate. They may not have all sizes of eggcrate or everytype of plumbing part, but its impossible for them to stock everything, and it makes absolutly no sense for them to stock parts that dont sell.

I never have a problem of them not having stuff but not knowing what stuff they do have by the names used in the trade. I went into one and was asking for a few different types of stain and the people in the paint section had no clue what I was asking for and kept trying to show me paint.

I've been visiting Chase&Pitkin instead. Seems like Home Depot has everything except what I want! Sure, they had a 2" to 3/4" pvc bushing on display, but none in stock. No big deal. Except no one else had it and I checked back after a month and even the display was gone! Probably didn't sell well.
I was buying a sheet of plywood and needed it cut. Asked the guy at the other dept. to page someone. Waited like 15 min. Asked again. Waited another 15 min. Had to leave due to escalating blood pressure. Had to wait a little bit b4 calling the manager so I didn't sound like a raving lunatic.
Oh yeah, asked about Shultz Aquatic Soil (Profile) and the people (asked 2 different ppl) never heard of it. Waited a month. Called and talked to someone during the day (I think mostly younger, less knowledgeble folks work evenings) and they new what it was and said it should be in soon.
Couple other times I can't remember right now. Maybe just coincidences (sp?) but enough that I can go somewhere else.

Like most places it seems my local Home Depot has employees of differing competency. Worst thing that ever happened at one though is a manager tried to help me instead of having someone from the department help me. I think he used to sell used cars or something.

My experiences with the local HD have been awful. It's as if they take random people off the street, give them vests, and let them walk around in a daze.

I'll skip the time wasted because of incompetent help and poor inventory control, and just note the time I went there during a thuderstorm and the roof was leaking like a seive. I know the employees don't build the store, but criminy, don't you think a building supply company would have more pride than that?

I use local stores or buy online.

I just got a brand new shiny Lowe's within walking distance. I'll never set foot in a Home Depot again. I used to like them but something happened somewhere along the way.

Even so, you should be able to find eggcrate in the lighting section and PVC fittings in plumbing. Just don't expect to find anyone who knows what those things are (that being the first crucial step in knowing where :argh: ).

In my experience Lowe's has a better plumbing selection and they occasionally take the time to put everything back in the right box with a handy label on the front of it, usually even a label on the shelf within a few feet of the box.
