I love my home Depot, its better than you’re Lows. Most of the staff knows a lot of what’s in there department and will help you. I have had to draw some stuff for them to help me find the stuff I wanted but they did help. The lighting people knew about overdriving “no” lights and we had a good talk about it. My home Depot doses not have the egg crate stuff but they did have something like it; I might have found it in the heating stuff but didn’t look.

In my experience Lowe's has a better plumbing selection

Ive found the same. My local Lowe's even stocks thin wall tubing.

My home depot is actually quite nice, mind you, they arent too helpful.
Or was that rona??
It was Rona, I think thats the canadian version of lowes.
NEVER have I had worse service.
I had to get some piping for my overflow setup, and all I wanted was some PVC pipe, all I really needed was like....2 feet
Well, first of all had to find it
THEN
no one around
anywhere
waited..
waited..
finally broke down and just cut off some washing machine tubing, which works fine
But when my g/f and I walked up to pay, they said I shouldnt have cut it myself....Well, there was NO-ONE around, so they had to do the whole phone someone, etc.
Funny when they paged they got a response in like 2 seconds....whatever

It's like all the box shops--the quality of the store relies on the people who work there. If you have lots of teenage kids (no offense, but most don't know a monkey wrench from a screwdriver) working there, it's going to be tough. I've had very good service, and the people locally will really spend time trying to help me find something. The first time I went in, I was looking for an ax. No one knew where they were, but they willingly walked around until they found them for me (in the garden section).

An important thing to realize about Home Depot is that they do not buy the items the sell--they are a warehouse. The product sellers give them the items for a price to sell, and then Home Depot gets a cut on the purchase price. That means that most of the managers are very willing to give huge discounts to make up for mistakes--I got a $500 door installed for about $80, after it was all said and done, because they'd screwed up. But, they really went out of their way to make it right. I'd rather know a place will work to make me happy during the 'what-if' scenarios. They are also pretty good about special ordering products sold at other Home Depots. And, they have never given me that "You are crazy" look I get from the locally owned hardware store-- a huge plus IMB.

The quality of the people who work there depends a lot on who they decide to hire. HD got a new CEO a few years back and if you're wondering what happened, that's what happened.

An article I found over at BusinessWeek included this bit:
The share of part-time sales clerks has gone from 26% to as high as 50% in 2002 -- even as rival Lowe's with a staff that's 80% full-time garners a rep for better service.

I used to be a fan but things have changed…

Home Crap-O

I am so glad I found this thread. It will give me someplace to rant!

I used to love Home Depot, but I hadn't been in a while until yesterday. I think I'll be switching to Lowe's as they've just opened up here. I went to Home Depot yesterday to buy some cement cinder blocks to hold up my 12 gallon tank; the furniture stand it was on started creaking and making me nervous, so I needed a cheap quick fix.

First off, all the yuppies and home DIY remodelers I used to see at HD were nowhere to be found. It was entirely, except for two or three exceptions, professional construction people. I would bet the DIYers moved to Lowe's. And I think I'll be following shortly. So I had the joy of running a gauntlet of construction worker sexual harassment ("'ey mamacita es bonita" *kissing noises*) UGH. Love that. :mad2

When I found my cinder blocks FINALLY--of course they were in a far corner, and down to only 16 bricks--I had to guilt trip a manager into loading them into a acrt for me. He gave me a "what are you doing at a construction supply house looking for construction supply, little girl?" kinda attitude. I'm 38, BTW. grrrrr. :argh

THEN, after all that, as I was rolling my cart of building materials to my car, a big Ford F120 almost ran me down. TWICE. I musta got in his way as he was loading construction materials before going to do important construction...things. :mad2

I don't think I'll be going to Home Depot anymore.

 :shake: :sad

I had this exact same problem at Lowes. :(

I love HD and Lowes. I like it that I can shop without any employees bothering me or asking me stupid questions.

There is a medium sized family owned hardware store near my house that I goto when I need something fast. As soon as I walk through the door there, some employee wants to help me, and then every 5 minutes another employee asks me "can I help you?", I always want to respond with "NO!, I cannot he helped". lol. It's a great place to go when I have a plumbing question though. So I have the best of both worlds I guess. Lucky me.

Before HD and Lowes, home improvement projects were a major hassle. You had to go to 5 different stores before you could even start a project.

I'll chime in here :p The local HD has gotten so bad, they have 4 "Self-Checkouts" and ONE teller, usually someone that's new  These Mega Corps couldn't really be so hard up that 2-3 people make $10@hr are going to break them    Ohh, maybe the CEO won't get that extra million $ bonus, can't have that can we

i like self checkouts, since they suck at ringing people up too.

reminds me of the time i brought wood there for the DIY stand, i was using my car at the time so i had to room for 8 foot 4x6s and 2x4s.

so i get them to cut it, the guy goes dont worry i dont even charge you for the cuts. i thanked him and didnt think nothing of it. when i got home he didnt charge because his service wasnt worthy of the 25 cents it would have cost because some of his cuts were almost 2 inches off!!!
