Would neon tetras work here?

Another recommendation of mine is that you don't put together schools that are from Vancouver and Denver, or Philladelphia and Ottowa. (little tip I got from Gary Bettman!) (hockey humor:D )

Neons schould be fine in that tank. The store is questionable though. Neons that are healthy and well cared for will not die quickly. I've got a school of 15 Neons in my 33G that I've had for almost 2 years.

Cardinals would also be nice but bear in mind that they prefer water temp to be around 85F whereas Neons prefer 78F.

1 mean zebra danio

i recently bought a small tank and needed some hardy fish to start out with ...so i went with the zebra danio i bought 2..about a week later i decided to add a few more...i tried 2 neon tetras...they seemed ok the first day but by the second day the zebra had become aggressive...the first neon died quickly within a day..the other neon hid behind the heater for about a day but the zebra got him and he then too died..i had no idea zebras would be so aggressive...now he's alone in his tank

I don't know about everybody else, but I have had no luck with tetras. I tried the cardinals, because they are supposedly a little hardier than neons. Well, I bought 5, and within 48 hours there was only one left, then he got ick and held on for as long as he could, I thought he'd make it. But, he didn't. All my water peramiters were great, exept that I had a high ph like you. Could that have been it? I don't know, but I still want a school of fish so I'm going to try white clouds, They look just like tetras exept for the color.

White clouds do best in low temp tanks. they will acclimate to higher temps but generally tend to be less exciting to watch than when the water is cooler.

With any fish, especially neon tetras, slow acclimation is gernally a good idea. I have found that my local fish stores tend to adjust their water to some crazy norm that they think is needed. This means my tapwater is usually slightly different. Slow acclimation prior to putting them in my tanks has always helped a lot. And neons are horrible in an uncycled tank.

I read somewhere that to acclimate neons, put them and the water from the bag they came in, into a little bucket, then use an airline with something to regulate at the end (a little valve) and drip water from the main tank into the bucket - slowly over a couple hours. Depending on room temp, the temp they came from and your tank temp, you may need to use a header (or heating pad, or something) to keep / raise the bucket's temp over time. Then, after a couple hours of acclimation, net them and put them in the tank.

FWIW,

Liz
