There is always the option of drilling it yourself..Drills cost about $20 odd..it is not hard to do and the cost saving there is great...As the bit will drill about 4 holes before throw away...

Or, as Julian advised, if you go down the live rock route, the money you would of spent on the cannister filter, can be put to the live rock...which to me, makes that a more financially viable option for you..

It is impossible for a sump to be more expensive.I agree with atnixon, if you are on a tight budget opt for a plastic container or a plastic drum, with a horizontal devider between media and pump compartment. It does sound easier to just slap a canister on there, but bob wont be your uncle. :)
 
Well, thanks! I'm comfortable with the area, but always learn a lot from you folk who are regulars here. I'm pretty one sided here at home...25 FW, 2 Sw, tanks. I keep looking at my neighbors unused swimming pool.... :idea:
 
We looked at an apartment once that had a pond. The wife sluged me when I asked her how many buckets of salt she thought it would take to go salty!!! Needless to say she then found all kinds of things wrong with the house. I told her the kids would learn not to touch those wires after they tried once or twice but she disagreed
