I just got a 30 gal. and it came with penguin 170. I already have a penguin 170 running on my estabished 55 gal. If I were to take filter cartridge and bio wheel off the 55 and place them on the 30 gallons filter would that really speed the cycle up? I have 2 filters running on my 55 gallon so I dont think that it would cause any problems there.
Do ya think it will work?

Yes

your 55g should be ok.

I did a fishless cycle on 3 of my tanks. Most of my tanks have the same kind of filter. I took a filter sponge from one of my ac filters and put it in the new filter. My fishless cycle was done in less than 2 weeks.

The filter off your penguin is full of the bene-bacteria you seek to grow while you cycle. You can reduce the cycle period by a week or two or three by using established media.

Yes, that is very good for the new tank.

You need a good starter colony, and that will give it to you.

All you really need is the filter media. The Bio Wheel is just extra.

Exactly, or take the bio-wheel since it is the greater colony in most cases, your cycle should be close to instant with the swap of a bio-wheel.

I just did this.
I had a Penguin 170 going on my 10G, cause I knew I was going to step up to a bigger tank.
I just got a 60G up and running, and I just cycled it for one day.
What I did was throw the UGF and new gravel into the 60G.
Gravel is from Lowe's - 0.5 cubic feet of "pea gravel" - about 50lbs.
The 10G wasn't gravel vacuum'd for two weeks (I normally do this once a week).
I did two 30% - 50% water changes back-to-back from the 10G and dumped the "dirty" water into the 60G with just the UGF plates and gravel on the bottom.
I left the water to sit and colonize the new gravel for about 30 hours and moved the Penguin 170 over.
I moved over my three 2.5" - 3" yellow labs.
Water quality looks good - N-ites, N-ates, ammonia, pH are all normal.
Will keep track of the water parameters over the next two weeks.
Good luck!

Wel I got my 30 gallon all set up. I used silica sand as my substate, used lots of rocks to create caves, and have two huge pieces of drift wood. My qestion is WHY is my water so cloudy? It isnt a brown cloud or green but instead it is whitish. Could this be from the sand? driftwood? or just because the tank is cycling?
