WTF is going on??

Is it possible that some other chemical that can't be detected with your test kits is leeching into the water from somewhere? Could be from the drftwood or something else that was added to (or nearby) your tank.

Just a thought.

I lost an entire 29g population once during an annual whole-tank cleaning. I had moved the residents to smaller tanks and cleaned the entire 29g, gravel and all. I had placed the gravel in some 5-gallon buckets in the garage. Pest control ended up spraying chemicals near the buckets (which I did not know at the time). Once I put everything back together and cycled the tank, I moved the fish back. They all died, starting with the bottom feeders and working upward, within a few days. Had water tested later and found pesticides in the water, the kind used by pest control companies. Very sad day for me as I had owned some of the fish for several years. And this was the day I gave up the hobby in my youth . . .

I have had that thought. The other variable was putting in all the plants I bought off someone on ebay. But I soaked them for 24 hrs in clorinated tap water before I put them into the tank. and there are no problems with the tank that I put some of the plants in...I split between 2 tanks.

Nursie, I bought a weather loach at super pets awhile back. Within a few days I had lost the new loach as well as my old one, a banjo cat and a betta. It was terrible. I have bought good fish there, but now I am much more careful.

Well Jodi..you are psychic...this golden nugget came from Super Pets. As a rule I don't even go there, but sinse the dog ate the only packet of root tabs that Petsmart had, I went, and was sucked into the fish room, and saw the golden nugget for $25..I was weak..
There were dead fish everywhere as per usual...I should have known better. This speciman was not moving around...it may have been on it's way out anyway, I don't know.

a while back whe i bought my pleco i had a really hard time getting them to stay alive

despite a long drip acclimation the first 2 died within a few hours- i was devastated and worried there was something in my water- but all the other fish were happy as usual.

the 3rd fish i was even more careful, i drip acclimated for an hour and i kept the container i was dripping inside the tank (the top was just above the water so that it didn't mix) i also made sure i got the pleco with the fullest tummy i had heard that was the best way to ensure you got a pleco that would survive- i also learned that they can be very difficult to acclimate(not just from my own expirience) and that temperature is a big deal for them-

while they're adaptable to a wide range of temps they cen't handle the swing well at all

but like roan said i'd wait a good while before i added anything else- to be really really sure the tank isn't the culprit

i'm still very curious what the dark tummy means. . .

good luck-Kyle

They do have at least one worker in there that is pretty knowledgeable, but other than that, they really are not my first choice. So sorry to hear about your prob AND the price of your fish. That reallly stinks!!! Did they take it back? I hope so. I forgot to take the loach back in, I just threw him in the garbage. I always forget about the dang guarantees :mad2:

thanks for the info Kyle....there are a lot of good suggestions here. Can you tell me how you did the drip acclimation?

For 25 bucks I'm careful about keeping the reciept, and I have him in the car to run back over my lunch hour. That was a decent price I felt..I just need to sticke to Charlies.

Charlies is great most of the time. They have the most knowledgeable workers for sure. The only prob I have noticed is that alot of their tanks have been dirty or have had Ich lately. I noticed that the painted glass fish and the fantailed goldfish tanks both had ich the last time I was in there. And they also had some very unhappy looking Discus, but they prob came from someone who had them and didnt know what they were getting into. I do usually buy my fish from there, but nothing else b/c they are more expensive than almost everywhere else. I have also had pretty good luck with Petsmart. Their tanks are usually in pretty good shape.

I have noticed a deterioration in things at chariles too...from what I hear there has been changes in personell. I did order some Boesemanis from them, and they are very nice..and healthy. Our fish auciton is next month. I should just hold off and see if any one brings anything interesting in there.
