Wierdness abounds...

I've had my 30g high going since March. It is medium-ish planted, residents started with zebra danios and peppered corys. The zebras were swapped out for guppies and green neon tetras, and we have CRS, nerites, and a zillion ramshorn snails.

To date, I have:

  1. Seen a zebra danio disappear. Not in the filter. Not on the floor. Not anywhere to be seen, no fins, bones, eyes, nothing. Just. Gone.
  2. Had one tetra contract what looked an awful lot like NTD. Euthanized him.
  3. Had one cory contract what was generally diagnosed as internal parasites - ended up euthanizing him.
  4. Fast forward several weeks - another cory starts acting like it has parasites (same symptoms. Before I could get a QT tank set up, he disappears. Apparently, he's hanging with the danio, because he's not on the floor, or in the tank, and no way could he fit into the filter intake.
  5. Now another tetra is looking off; 90% sure it is NTD though he is swimming and eating fine - swimming well enough so that I can't net the little SOB, anyway. Hard to see, but his color is all washed out especially on his back, stripe looks ragged and faded, etc. Overall he looks milky. Thoughts on this one?
Anyway, just wanted to vent on the wierdness - OTOH, my plants and shrimp are going gangbusters, and I've got a zillion ramshorn snails in the tank.

Before it is asked, no ammonia or nitrites, my nitrates are typically very low as well due to the plants, I believe (API master kit). I've got some very fast growing nutrient sponges in there. 25-30% WC every week, temp is 76-77 degrees, over filtered with a SunSun 302 cannister and an AC50 (seeding for a QT/hospital tank).

Sorry for your loss. A couple of questions if I may...

What type of filter do you use and also, what do you test you water with liquids or strip kit?

The disappearing fish could be down to the tank scavengers being very good at their job. It can be shocking just how quickly inverts can make dead fish vanish without a trace.

Look up - I think I posted while you were typing ;) - API Master Kit, two filters - one is a SunSun 302 cannister and I also have an AC50 on there at the moment, seeding it for eventual use on another tank.

If the shrimp are alive water quality should be ok for fish, but if you have parasites you need to take out all the fish and dose them, and don't leave any in the tank or it will just go on and on like this.

The really odd part is that the danio disappeared before the shrimp were added <cue Twilight Zone theme>

jm, I took the thing apart down to the substrate and sifted that for the danio - never found a trace. I've done everything but pull the big piece of driftwood out looking for the cory, and I can see pretty much that entire piece from outside the tank. I've even lifted it up and down to see if I could dislodge anything stuck underneath and found nothing at all. Very odd. Must be the ghosts in the house....
