Just a little update...today I got an informal job offer from the VP of the division I'm working in at the pharma company. He said to think about what I want and if I'm interested because they can accommodate whatever I'd like, job wise (more intern, consultant, full employee). He said they were extremely happy with my work and really wanted to hire me. So at least that's one option open for sure. And I'm liking the work a lot more than I was at first, now that my project is going.

That's great, Labby!

See... they couldn't help but realize how awesome you are after they met you. =)

We should all have such career problems! Do what you love most and don't worry about money or hours or and you'll live longer and be happier.
+1

Do what you really love and you will never work a day in your life.

Best wishes,
Wes

What about doing pharma for a few years...keep your same standard of living, get the loans paid off with the extra $$ (+ maybe a house and car paid off), then consider critical care?

With less debt load, the lower salary will be a lot easier to live with.

If you're working 9-5M-F @ pharma, you may be able to do some critical care work part time too.

Best wishes in whatever you choose!

I agree that they way to start is Pharm to pay off debt build a nest egg and then transfer out to academia or critical care. Most of us have to start bottom move up to make money. You have a chance to start with money then do what you love.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm definitely not going to rush anything, and no matter which way I go I'll probably apply several places for negotiating power when it comes to my salary.

do whta you love.

#1 sounds great if you like it and dont mind selling your soul for another year.
#2 looks like a great option if you are looking to get into a more settled down type position where you can buy your house with a fence a lap dog and a car
#3. Wait. you will enjoy it much more once you have experience. Plus you can always teach and work and get paid twice.

How much does a critical care pharmacist pay? Would you be able to work as a retail pharmacist or some other pharmacist if you can't find a desirable position as a critical care pharmacist?
