Dont get it if you can't properly house it. I've never kept severums but I would say a 55 gallon is what you should aim for... for now. You cannot keep a 5" fish in a 10 gallon tank, that is just mean.
55gal Minimum for them. If you can't house it, and your friend doesn't want it, try to find a suitable home for the fish, not force it into a small cramped tank where it will be unhappy.
yeah . . . besides . . . i have to buy bottled water for my tanks . . . so yeah ill have to think of another idea for him. . . thanks for educating me in the way of the serevum cichlid : )
well water . . .and yeah im have chemicals but i have been to chicken to use them . . . we have alot of crap put into the water to make it safe for use . . . but for a fish it would be way to difficult . . . i dunno i guess ill try to get around to testing it and trying to fix it in the summer . . . but i have had great success in using bottled and . .. not as much with well . . . so yup . . .
Purchasing RO/DI water from a pet store might be cheaper then buying bottled water? I'm not too sure though... and it depends if its available to you. Also an RO/DI unit is not overly expensive, it may be more economical in the long run if you purchase one yourself (especially if you were to get a larger tank).
hmm . . well im not sure how expensive it is i dont buy it my parents do because its at the grocery store . . . and thats where i dont go . . . they buy it in 2 1/2 gallon jugs and i only have 10 g tanks at the moment . . . its easier for guppies ya know . . . and bettas . . . i have never heard of one of those water things . . . maybe its a canada thing only . . im not sure . . ill have to ask petsmart sometime . . . thanks for the reply : )
No, its not a Canadian thing.... RO/DI units are a worldwide method of purifiying water. Do some research into them, you can usually get 25gpd units fairly cheap, being $80-100, sit back and add up how much all that bottled water costs you, and considering a RO/DI unit's filters last for generally at least a year, and only cost $20-30 to replace, its a wise investment...
