Yellow Lab and Oscar?

I would think the lab would have more of a chance in the community tank. If its only 3inches your other fish should be safe for a while. Like coler said, Labs are pretty mild mannered.

We put the lab in the oscar tank last night and Oscar chased him for about 5 min but the lab was quick and hid. This morning when I looked in the tank, the lab was swimming beside the oscar!

Thanks everyone for your help!:)

best of luck with it, I hope it works out for you and the fish.

I like hearing about the exceptions to the rules that work - you always have to remember that fish don't read books/profiles :) I wouldn't be posting my current stocking here and asking for a round of applause because I know that it does not conform with what would be considered the best advice, but like you I have my fingers crossed and am willing to change it based on what I observe.

I've heard of people keeping Labs in community tanks. Some people claim it can be done beacuse they are the least agressive of all African Cichlids.

But with Cichlids it always varies on the particular fish because they have different personalities.

I am just amazed by the way they act toward each other!
I even saw Oscar rub up against the Lab!
I know the situation can take a turn for the worst at any moment, but for now I really think Oscar has found himself a buddy!:)

Yeah just keep an eye on it, it may work out great.

If not, I'm sure the lab will be fast enough to get away (for a while) if aggression begins, and then you can worry about seperating them .

Well thats good you saved the fish. Something you should know.. yellows can still be a lot more aggressive than the oscar can the only thing is that the oscar has a big advantage.. his mouth. Yeah oscars are far from aggressive (compared to red devils, jags, and jacks) but if there is a fsh small enough he will try. but just add more rocks and they should do ok. just make sure you get the lab out before the oscar has time to grow to his full length 14+ inches which, if taken care of properly, is only a matter of 1.5 to 2 years time! and the whole growing to the size of the environment is a bunch of bull.. a fish will still grow to full or near full length but will have deformatees. I have seen it at LFS, it aint pretty :(

you could always get a divider.
