Yellow Lab Breeding

My labs have spawned 3 times and I have no fry to show for it. After reading quite a bit about breeding them and the pros and cons of stripping them, I decided I did not want to strip the eggs and that I wanted the females to do what they automatically know to do. I also did not remove them from the community while they were holding.

I am beginning to think that I should remove them from the community while holding. It is strictly a yellow lab tank (55 gallons with 7 labs.)

You could beef up the rock habitat so the the fry would have a better chance to survive..

I have lots of rockwork for hiding and that seems to work really well. They hide in the tightest areas under rocks and slate.

Have the held very long? It can take a few tries before the females get the whole process right and the fry survive.

I think they held for about 3 weeks. Don't really remember.

i dont know anything about it, but they had an article that was like 5 pages in this months edition of aquarium fish international magazine.

I strip my son's yellow labs and put them in a floating nursery. Last batch we stipped 37 and all 37 developed nicely.

I also have not removed my females from the main tank when holding. There have been a total of 6 broods: 3 from aceis and 3 from rusties; and even with the plenty rockwork that is in my tank, I have saved only 4 fry. I think there are not enough small caves or crevices for them to hide and survive.

That sounds like maybe the cause of my losses - no place for fry to hide. All the adults have shelters but too big for the fry I guess, and so they got eaten. Glad I ain't in this for the money!

Yes, I think that is what happens in your tank as well as in my tank.
