yellow lab with convict and silver dollars. will it work?

Oh sorry to hear that but dont say i didnt warn you.

How big are the Silver Dollars? From experience, I wouldn't expect it to work unless they're bigger than the lab.

The Silver Dollars are full grown adults. They are about 5-6 inches in diameter. They are big, fast as h*ll and eat a ton. They are brick solid, I've had them from babies to big boys.

One of the issues with mixing biotopes is communication. Africans and SA's use different body language to communicate. While water quality is also an issue, it is possible for fish to adapt. I will applaude you for choosing steady alkaline water over unstable acidic water. Another factor there is water hardness, and I think is a bit more important with cichlids. If your plan did work for a while, I would expect the convict would eventually kill the labs when it matured. Your water is suitable for africans methinks, would you consider getting rid of the SDs and cons and setting up a malawi biotope?

well, i would consider changing my tank to an africian set up if my SD's ever died, which they don't.

I couldn't bear myself to part with them considering I've had them for years and years. I'd miss them too much and feel like I ditched 'em. Can't do it. As annoying as they can be, they've clearly become a part of the family and I do love them.

So many times I've had my SD's ruin potential tank setups for me. I originally wanted to get Discus, but decided not to because the silver dollars are so fast and pushy. Then I was gonna go with africians but I didn't and got some cichlids. they died and only the convict is left with them...

I guess I could get another cichlid maybe? Or take a gamble with the Yellow Labs...

Sure, I could. I do like the keyhole cichlids. they are cool. Ideally, I would like a brightly colored fish to brighten up my tank. Its all silver and black right now with the current fish. So that's sorta why I was curious about the yellow labs.

I personally think severums are ugly. they just look like hybrids to me even though I know they are perfectly natural.

I thought about a Green Terror, but i've heard they can take over a tank.
