i finally went out and got my plecos! i honestly don't have any idea what type they are but are 1 inch. i probably sound really noob-ish, but i know what im on about. they are black with small white spots and white on the end of their fins. oh, i have 2. i got them at a little pet store for $7 each, which is the best price i've seen in a long time. i might even be getting a job there soon. so, i want to know if anyone has tips for a 1st time pleco owner. sorry, no pics for now as the camera is stuffing up. i will get some soon and have heaps.

thanks, caleb

Driftwood, stones, and fresh veg appreciated by most plecs!
Congrats on your new fish!

Caleb, plecos are nearly impossible to identify without actual photos yet for us to look at. And since yours are only an inch long so far, it might be a while before you can identify them. I've got calico short fin and long fin BNs, for example, who are nearly black and have white spots on their body and white tips on their fins.... but certainly wouldn't know if yours are the same kind just based on this description. There are just so many different kinds of plecos that could be described almost the exact same way.

Also just moved your thread to the pleco forum where more pleco keepers are apt to see this and provide input for you.

Also, as juvies, their coloration can change drastically....

Since the OP doesn't list his location but based on his name I can say almost for sure that, if he is in Australia, its a bn. I know several Aussie pleco breeders online and so I know what things cost due to the strictly enforced and draconian import laws there. Anything more exotic would cost much more. Only an accident might make it something else. :-)

by bn, i think you mean bristle nose? im almost 100% sure its not a bristle nose. sorry for no pictures. and yes im in australia. we actually have many types of pleco. ive seen at 1 store alone, about 30 types of plec. thanks everyone

Not only are there a couple of pleco sites with Australian members, but there is an Australian based pleco site as well.

Yes there are a good variety of plecos there. However, because most L#s are banned from import, the only ones available are locally bred and are mostly pretty expensive. I know a couple of breeders there and what they say fish go for.

I sure hope you got something more unusual than bn and will be curious to see pictures if you post them.

i looked in another thread and someone had photos that looked exactly like mine and a member said they look like regular BN's
