hello all

i have had bettas for several years and have a heavily planted ten gallon with some cories and platies, i should be getting a 55 gal in the next month or so and wanted some advice on what to stock

i wanted to have a heavily planted tank with a sosuth american/amazon theme

Id like it centered around some cockatoo cichlids
my husband would like a school of hatchetfish
Id like a bristlenose cat and some cories if that was possible and i am completely open to suggestion, Id love to see what you guys come up with

and dtw thanks for having such a great site, have always been able to find teh info i need!!

a SAC/ or south american community sounds nice.. with a 55 gallon.. why not try keyhole cichlids (i have some and are fun to watch) they're peaceful compared to any other cichlid. the ones i have tend to group themselves together. just a suggestion.

how many keyhole cichlids would you group together?

and i was leaning towards the tetras as well, either rummy nose or black widow tetras

now im guessing i could fit a school of hatchets and a school of tetras, how large should i make the schools
hatchets 6-8?
tetras 8?

and if i add 5-7 cories on the bottom would i be maxed out and would that be alright for cichlids, i read a lot of breeds, including the cockatoo get fairly territorial of the bottom of the tank

i am also reading conflicting reports

some place say that the dwarf chiclids do best in pairs and others say one male with two or more females, any opinions on that?

I prefer trios of them.

I like pairs myself; I don;t know I guess I just don't want anyone as the "3-wheel" haha

Seriously though, many ppl get trios and either stick with them or wait for a mating pair to form and return the 2nd female. This may be the cause for the conflicting reports.

I like the keyhole suggestion. I almost went that route, but opted for the more colorful Angels and Blue Rams instead.

I always fancied Cockatoo Cichlids too, but they are WAY too expense for me ($20+) and can be very territorial if I recall correctly!!! :(

3 keyhole cichlids
8 hatchetfish
8 black widow tetras
6 Albino cory catfish

im not too worried about price, i have seen some good deals on aquabid, im just concerned about their temprement, i like the keyhole cichlid idea as well

i would like to fit at least one bristlenose in there, possible two, is that a possibility??

I don't see why not.
