yet another stocking question

I think thats fine but any other opinions would be helpful

update***

the tank is on its way home and i am going to cycle it with some filter medium i have been keeping in the ten gallon tank, was able to get one of those all in one kits on sale for 150 plus i already have an emporor biowheel filter that i am going to use as well (couldnt find any good deals on craigslist and then the sale popped up); built the stand over the past couple of weeks, just need to make the doors

i plan on adding the fishies slowely after a several weeks of fishless cycling

if i add some snails from the ten gallon would that help the process or just be detrimental to the snails?

my hubby rocks, he went to pick up the tank and found one with the box open, got the manager and found that the hood and lights were missing from the kit, so the manager threw in a new light and hood from one of the floor models (a much nicer light and sturdier hood imo) and then my hubby was able to talk them down to 120 for everything!

update:::

i put the filter media in my ten gallon a month ago to build up the bacteria
the media has been in the 55 now for a week and parameters looking good so I have my 3 platys hanging in the tank and they are fine. I added some amazon swords, there not looking so hot, pretty sure its the basic lighting

i dont want to buy a new light, going to build a hood eventually so i am going to pick up some higher wattage bulbs later today, are the ones labeled for plants (full spectrum) adequate for now????

still go back and forth on my stocking choices, too many to pick from!!!!!

I like pairs myself; I don;t know I guess I just don't want anyone as the "3-wheel" haha
But, a lot of the apistogramma species are harem spawners, and in that case having a trio is better.

The cockatoos are not aggressive enough to cause much of a problem in a 55, even when spawning. If you like them then go for it. But, keyholes are a great choice as well, so if you like those better then get those.

Your lighting is inadequate for Amazon swords, and probably most other plants. When you say you are going to build a hood and get higher wattage bulbs, do you mean regular normal output flourescents? You'll need quite a few of those to grow Amazon swords IMO. Mine aren't even doing so wonderfully, and I have 130W compact flourescent light over my 55. My suggestion to you is to build your canopy and buy a retrofit kit for either compact flourescent or high output T-5 lighting. Check out www.hellolights.com or www.ahsupply.com for prices. This will be cheaper than buying a new light strip, but of course that would work great too. But with those normal output lights, you'd have to use probably 4 of them (assuming they are 4 foot 40 watt bulbs) to get roughly the same effect that you would from a 2x65W CF retrofit kit.

i was hoping to go T5 and get the retrofit kit when i build the hood, I am going to see if the store will take the swords back, i dont want them dying on me and i know i wont get the hood done in the next two days!!
