Hey,
I've been thinking about getting a third tank to add to my 10 Gallon and my 40 Gallon Freshwater, planted tanks. I haven't decidced what I'm going to stock them with, but in researching my options I saw some Yo-Yo Loaches in my LFS's display tank playing tag with eachother, there were 3 in a very very large tank. They looked really cool and very active! I was wondering how big these guys get, how easy/hard they are to keep, and how many gallons they would need. I would probably get 3, and I am looking into a 20 Gallon long, but if I need to get a bigger tank I would (but no alrger than 28-20 G).
I was planning on either Rams or Festivums, I kind of want a small breeding pair of cichlids for some variety and excitement compared to my other tanks. Would they be alright together?

Thanks!

re yoyos

Hiya yoyos are great fish! They will reach 4-5 inches in the first year, very fast growers.
They won't get much bigger than that if at all.
They are very gregarious fish and need very clean water no salt, around 82 degrees. I've never had rams , but I do you know they will defend them selves if pushed. They like hang out together too. Groups min 3 and need lot's of caves and hiding places. Ps they have been known to jump out of tanks...

Loaches are Kuhl.... As well as the Kuhli Loaches even though you can't see them much during the day. If, when I get another large tank, I would get a few Loaches in there.... I think they are good community fish too..:)

Yoyos get to be about 4 inches long and it takes them awhile to get there I have been told. I have had 3 of mine 4 months now and have not grown a bit. They like being in groups, so 3 of them should be great. As for the tank, I have read that a 30 gal is minimum, but if possible I would go bigger (thou you do not plan to, I had to say it anyway.)

Mine are VERY hardy. I have had many instances where any other fish would have died, but they hung in there. Once I pulled them out of a rock with tweezers, and one survived in my corner tank filter for 2.5 hours while I was moving the tank.

They like to have many, many, many hiding spots. They feel safe this way and the safer they feel the more they come out and play. They are great to watch. I love feeding time cause after that they play tag. It is also great to see them attack snails I feed them.

I do not know much about cichlids, to tell you if they would go alright together, sorry, but for excitement, yoyos will keep you entertained in the evening hours.

I have three in a 20-gallon along with a pair of dwarf gouramis and some harlequin rasporas. They're pretty happy. I also have two in my 40-gallon where there are several more caves and such. They actually barge right into the red tailed shark's lair and hang out! It makes him crazy. The pair of kribensis in there also seem to put up with them hanging around their house too. Sometimes I wonder if the other fish are irritated by the constant cruising and shadowing of the yo yo loaches, but they don't get beat up, so there you go.

I have a Yo-yo loach in my 55 gallon planted tank. He gets along fine with 5 angels, a large pleco and 12 signal tetras. Since I've had him I've had very few snails! :) I've heard they get up to 4 inches long but I've had mine for 2 years and he's only 3 inches long. A very interesting fish to watch. I've noticed that I can hear it making a clicking noise while eating if I listen closely. I would definitely buy more if I found them again.

re yoyo's

Are you feeding your yoyo's bloodworms?? If yours are still small and not growing they may need better food or more often water changes..Loaches need very clean water to thrive they also like a bit of current as they are river fish.

I feed my fish frozen and freeze-dried bloodworms, frozen and freeze-dried brine shrimp, freeze-dried tubifex worms, algae pellets and sometimes flakes.

I have 2 filters in my 30 gal, a whisper 20-40 gal and a 30 gal coner filter. I do at least two water changes a week (1/3 of the tank each.) I test my water and have no nitrates/nitrites and no ammonia. My fish are bold colors, not faded, showing they are not stressed out. As for current I am not sure how fast you are talking about, but there is a small current from the filter and I have an 18-inch bubble wall they sometimes like to play in, swimming up and down in the bubbles (quite fun to watch!).

I am wondering how come you say that they grow fast? Everything I have read, which is anything in English I can find on the web, from info websites to people’s personal experience says they grow slow.

I also have heard my yoyos clicking when they eat. It is so cute. They have to be my favorite fish out there. The LFS around here has about 25 really little guys for sale and I have to make myself not buy them because I have no more room. So skeletalmachine I hope that you are able to find more!!! You will love their interaction, and they would love the company too!

I bought 2 Yo-Yos a few months ago, leaving one poor guy at the LFS. I just had to go back and buy the third one. Now they are about 3.5" long (twice as big as when I bought them). They live on a healthy diet of store bought shrimp chopped up and frozen bloodworm. They almost come right out of the water to nibble the bloodworm from my fingers. Yo-Yos definitely get the 'goofball' fish award.;)
